Sample Collection & Receiving (Phlebotomy)

Two connected stages move a sample from the patient to the analyzer:

  • Phlebotomy Worklist (lab/pages/phlebotomy.php) — lists orders awaiting sample collection.
  • Sample Receiving (lab/pages/receiving.php) — where samples are logged in on arrival at the lab, with a structured rejection workflow for compromised specimens.

Collecting a sample

  1. Go to Phlebotomy Worklist.
  2. Find the order, draw the sample(s), and mark collected. The system automatically creates one physical sample per distinct specimen type + container type combination in the order — so if an order needs two different tube types, two samples are created, and every test sharing a tube type links to that same physical sample.
  3. Print the barcode tube label for each sample.

Receiving a sample

  1. Go to Sample Receiving.
  2. Scan or enter the accession number.
  3. If the sample is acceptable, mark it received.
  4. If not, reject it with a specific reason: hemolyzed, clotted, insufficient quantity, mislabeled, wrong container, expired in transit, or leaked in transit.

Common issues & fixes

check whether they actually share the same specimen+container combination; if not, more than one tube is genuinely needed and that's expected behavior.
the ordering clinician/ward should be notified promptly so a fresh sample can be arranged; document the specific rejection reason for the record.
check the label printer connection; the barcode fragment is shared logic used across both the standalone Lab module and IPD-side collection.
